How to Use a Curling Iron: 13 Essential Tips

Hair-Care-USING-A-CURLING-IRON-1Do you want to know how to use a curling iron? A curling iron can be a girl’s best friend, especially when prepping to attend a special occasion. In fact, for some, a curling iron has become a part of their everyday hair routine. It is a magical tool that can easily add texture to the hair. However, it can also cause hair damage and breakage if not used properly. To get gorgeous curls, they are not really that easy to use. When watching hair tutorials or hair stylists do it, it looks like a no brainer. But when you start doing it on your own hair, it is actually harder than it looks.

So, here are some tips on how to use a curling iron:

1. Moisturize your hair

Curling irons can be drying, so it is important that your hair is well-moisturized especially if you are using it often. Some hair stylists though prefer skipping the conditioner on the day you are curling your hair. In this way, the curls will not slide and will just stay in place. You can also do this once in a while. But if the curling iron is your best friend every single day, do not skip conditioner. Heat can be ultimately damaging so you need to moisturize your hair to prevent dryness and frizz.

If your hair is already damaged, use the Rejuvenate Strengthening Protein Treatment after each wash followed by the Hydrate Conditioning Treatment. If your hair is healthy, use the Hydrate Conditioning Treatment after each wash. Once or twice per month, you can use the Rejuvenate Strengthening Protein Treatment followed by the Hydrate Conditioning Treatment. The Hydrate Conditioning Treatment restores moisture lost during chemical treatments and heat styling. It penetrates the hair to provide moisture within the hair shaft. The Rejuvenate Strengthening Protein Treatment rebuilds your hair structure and restores protein lost during chemical treatments and heat styling. It stops breakage, fortifies, and strengthens damaged hair. Remember, when using a conditioner; apply it from the middle section of your hair all the way down to the tips. If you have time, let the product stay for 10 to 15 minutes to let the hair absorb the moisturizing ingredients. For deep conditioning, use a shower cap and let it stay for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing.  Moisturizing is an important part of how to use a curling iron.

2. Choose the size of curling iron

When learning how to use a curling iron, you shouldn’t buy just any curling iron. The barrel comes in different sizes. Choose one based on the look you want to achieve.

    • 2-inch. If you want that perfect bend at the ends of your hair, use a 2-inch curling iron. It is as if you just got a blow dry.
    • 1 ½ inch. For sexy, loose waves, a 1 ½ inch barrel is the secret.
    • 1 ¼ inch. It is not a popular size, but it can create lovely sexy loose waves. You can also use it for tight waves.
    • 1-inch. If you are buying only one curling iron, choose a 1-inch barrel. It is the most flexible among all sizes. It can be used on all hair lengths and it can create various curls and waves.
    • ¾ inch. For vintage-kind of curls, use smaller curling irons, such as this.
    • 5/8 inch. You need this if you have naturally curly hair. It helps in getting even curls.
    • 3/8 inch. It is for hair with natural ringlets

3. Choose ceramic and tourmaline curling irons

Curling irons are made of different materials. The most popular options are ceramic and tourmaline curling irons since they are less damaging compared to others. Ceramic curling iron can heat hair evenly, while tourmaline curling iron has negative ions that seal the cuticles of the hair to preserve the moisture in it.

4. Right temperature

A major part of learning how to use a curling iron is choosing the right temperature. Choose the heat setting depending on your hair condition. If you have fragile, colored hair, go for the lowest setting. On the other hand, if you have coarse hair, you can go a little bit higher. Observe how your hair responds to heat and adjust the temperature as you go along.

5. Use heat protectant products

Before using the curling iron, do not forget to spray on a heat protectant product. This will help to minimize the damage to your hair.  Protecting your hair is an important aspect of how to use a curling iron.

6. How to use a curling iron to get loose waves

    • Section hair into diagonal sections, securing it with a clip.
    • Take about a two inch section of the hair. Comb to make sure there are no tangles before curling. Wrap the hair around the barrel from roots to tips while the iron is pointing downwards.
    • Let the hair stay for about 10 seconds before releasing the hair.
    • For beach waves, just run fingers through hair. For a more glam look, gently brush the hair.

7. How to use a curling iron to create bouncy curls

    • Divide hair into sections.
    • Starting at the bottom, take one inch section of your hair and untangle using a comb.
    • Clamp hair at the ends of the hair and roll the iron up until where you want your curls to start.
    • Let the hair stay for about 10 seconds before releasing the hair.
    • If you wish to let the curls stay longer, once you release a section from the curling iron, roll it back up using your fingers. Be carefully though since the hair is really hot once released from the iron. Secure it with a Bobbi pin. If you do not want to get any clip marks, place tissue paper in between the pin and the hair. Remove the pins just before leaving the house to make sure your curls will last the whole day.

8. How to use a curling iron to get the blow dried look

Using the 2 inch curling iron, just bend the ends of the hair.

9. Remember, your hair should not be twisted or twirled when wrapping around the barrel

If hair is twisted, heat will not be distributed evenly.

10. Spritz on some hair spray to hold the curls

If you wish to smooth out the hair strands sticking out at the crown of your head, you can also use some hair spray. Just lightly spray on the handle of a tail comb and use it to flatten the strands.

11.  If you want to add shine to your hair, you can apply hair serum

It can also tame and smooth out frizz. Choose a serum that is not greasy on the hair. Put a pea-sized amount of the product onto your palm, rub your palms, and spread evenly from the middle section of your hair, down to the tips. Avoid the roots or the top portion so your hair will not look greasy.

12. Do not use curling iron when hair is wet or damp

Hair is at its weakest state when it is wet. Applying heat on wet or damp hair can cause damage and breakage.

13. Clean your curling iron

You use hair products on your hair so do not forget to clean your curling iron after use. Product can build up and its performance can be affected. You might get dull curls due to the uneven heat it produces.

Curling irons are indeed magical tools but proper usage is needed to get gorgeous curls. Also, you should never take for granted the condition of your hair. When hair gets dry and damaged, even lovely curls cannot make your hair look sexy. Therefore, use your curling iron with caution.
