Why You Should Avoid Alcohol in Hair Products

If you’re steering clear of all hair care products containing alcohol, don’t be too hasty. Some alcohols are definitely drying, but others are beneficial. Alcohols to avoid include SD alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and denatured. All of those, especially in high concentrations, can cause dryness. They’re often found in hair gels and sprays.

Fatty alcohols, however, are fine to use. If you see cetearyl, stearyl or behenyl alcohol, these ingredients are typically used as thickeners. They don’t evaporate quickly like the alcohols you should avoid, and you’ll often find them in shampoos and conditioners. Knowing the nature of different alcohols will help you select the best products for your hair.
