What Makes a Moisturizer Moist?

Hair-Care-WHAT-MAKES-MOISTURIZER-MOIST-1Healthy hair normally has a moisture content of approximately 10%. If your hair’s moisture content drops below this level the key is to increase the hair’s ability of attract and retain moisture. This is accomplished by using moisturizers. But with so many products to choose from, how do you know what to look for? Well, the first essential ingredient is water – that’s right, good old H20. When shopping for your perfect moisturizer look for those that contain water within the top three ingredients. Also, moisturizers with natural oils, and herbal extracts, these are very effective, as they provide a wide range of nutrients, antioxidants and vitamins vital for healthy hair and scalp.  Next, good moisturizers have “humectants,” such as vegetable glycerin, honey, or glycosaminoglycans, which not only replace lost moisture but actually attract moisture and retain it in the cortex of the hair. Moisturizing should be done on a daily basis, as the exposure to the elements, and daily heat styling could lead to a dry, brittle hair and unwanted breakage.
